Tansu: Traditional Japanese Cabinetry was published in 1981 By John Weatherhill & Co as the first researched history of Japanese mobile cabinetry in any language. It has had two editions and numerous printings. Now out of print, it continues as an authoritative guide for scholars to curators and collectors.

Ty Heineken is a cultural anthropologist with a long interest and attachment to the pre-industrial technologies of rural Japan. He has spent decades in the mountainous Tohoku Region amongst local craftsmen and lectured around the world on Japanese culture and history. His family traces its interest in Japan back to the 17th century. Ty is currently the curator of Studio Japan as well as its chief conservator.
